Hunger Strikers Call For Release Of Iranian Dissidents
PRAGUE, 14 July 2006 (RFE/RL)-- Dozens
of Iranian activists across the world say they have begun a three-day hunger
strike to call for the release of political prisoners in Iran.
The campaign follows a call by dissident journalist Akbar Ganji for
protests that call attention to the plight
of prisoners of conscience in
Activists in
Hojat Sharifi,
a leader of
"Student activists in other cities, such as Hamedan,
also are joining the hunger strike," said Sharifi,
who is himself on a hunger strike.
Iranian officials have repeatedly denied that there are any political
prisoners in the country.
