Tehran, Iran, Jul. 27 – A student from the restive Iranian city of Ahwaz has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to the state-run news agency ILNA.

Lefteh Sorkheh, a student in Shahid Chemran University, was handed down the sentence for “acting against national security”, ILNA reported on Wednesday.

It said that Sorkheh was found guilty of membership in an outlawed group.

Ahwaz, the Arab-dominated provincial capital of oil-rich Khuzestan Province, has been the scene of unremitting anti-government protests since early 2005.
