Tehran, Jun. 08 - A member of Iran’s powerful Guardian Council said that women were rejected from standing as candidates in the upcoming June 17 presidential elections because they were “incompetent to take up presidential responsibilities”.

“Women lack the intellectual capacity and understanding to stand as candidates in the [presidential] elections, and for this reason they were disapproved en mass”, the non-cleric GC member said.

The Guardian Council,
Iran’s hard-line watchdog is comprised of six senior clerics and six judicial experts who are hand-picked by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
